During a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) it was determined that Formula 2 would be re-introduced to bridge the gap between F1 and F3, with the intention of establishing it as the most direct route on the way to Formula 1.
Plans for the Formula 2 series came to light when it was included in the FIA's new superlicense 'points' guidelines in January and though the WMSC doesn't give much away in terms of regulations of structure, it has invited promoters to begin submitting tenders.
"The WMSC has approved the creation of a new FIA F2 Championship, aimed at bridging the gap between F3 and F1 and completing the single seater ladder.
"As a consequence, a detailed project will be submitted to the WMSC in July and a call for expression of interest is planned to be launched with regard to the promotion of this championship as soon as possible."
The F2 category was a staple of the motorsport ladder until 1984 when it was superseded by the Formula 3000 series. When that too disbanded in 2004, the GP2 Series as conceived by Bernie Ecclestone and therefore not officially run by the FIA was created to provide a feeder category on the F1 support package.
The FIA has previously attempted to revive the F2 class with a format that would see drivers race identical cars as supplied by the series – thus eliminating the 'teams' but it would only run between 2009 and 2012 before it was discontinued over falling entries. crash.net
