Sprint car driver dies in wreck at Wisconsin dirt track (Update)

UPDATE The Raceway issued a statement via its Facebook page that reads:

"Beaver Dam Raceway experienced a tragedy Saturday night during the hot laps session for the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series, a Midwest touring series….

….Beaver Dam Raceway General Manager Carolyn Mueller and Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series President Steve Sinclair decided to cancel the rest of the race program out of respect for the family and friends….

…Fans, drivers and crew members were offered an opportunity for a refund, but had the option to donate the money to the family, which most did.

Beaver Dam Raceway is a 0.33 mile dirt track roughly 65 miles northwest of Milwaukee.

09/21/14 A sprint race car driver died after crashing during practice at a Wisconsin dirt track on Saturday, the raceway said in a statement..

Scott Semmelmann, 47, died from his injuries after crashing during a practice session about 6:00 p.m., the Beaver Dam Raceway said on its website.

Organizers canceled the rest of the night's events, which were part of a Midwest racing tour called the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series, out of respect for Semmelmann's friends and family, the statement said. Further information on the crash was not immediately available.
