Indy Speedway ordinance will crackdown on race-day parking

Speedway, Indiana is poised to wipe away the quaint but unsightly race-day tradition of residents using tattered traffic cones and teetering sawhorses to hold street parking spaces.

But the town likely won’t continue a pilot plan that requires residential permit parking.

A task force has recommended the city crack down on residents who informally reserve parking spaces by placing furniture and other assorted objects on the street in front of their houses. But the Neighborhood Pride Implementation Team also says the council should scrap a permit parking plan used on a trial basis last summer.

“Many people said the permits were unfriendly and unwelcoming to visitors," said Town Manager Barbara Lawrence. “Instead, the team recommended we enforce the ordinance that is already on the books that prohibits placing objects in the street." Indy Star
