NASCAR Trucks to make history in Canada
This event also marks the first time in 13 years that series has raced on a road circuit. The series also made history this year when it raced on the dirt-surfaced Eldora Speedway in Ohio, the first time since 1970 that any NASCAR-sanctioned race has been held on a surface other that pavement.
With this race, NASCAR will continue its presence in Canada for its seventh year. It held Nationwide Series races on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal for the past six seasons, but was dropped from the schedule in 2013.
Other than some regional racing in this country, there was a large void in NASCAR racing in Canada. The stock car giant held two top-level races here when Grand National (now Sprint Cup) races were held on the horse racing track at Niagara Falls' Stamford Park in July of 1952 (won by Buddy Shuman in a Hudson), and Lee Petty drove his Oldsmobile to a win in 1958 on the oval at Toronto's CNE grounds.
The main event at CTMP, which is the Chevrolet Silverado 250, will take place September 1 at 2 p.m. and will be 69 laps in duration on the 3.957-km (2.459-mile) 10-turn course. Support events over the weekend include two races in the Canadian Touring Car Championship, and the Clarington 200, the 10th race on the 2013 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series tour, and this will be a 200-km event on the road course north of Bowmanville.
