Tony Stewart out of hospital
Stewart had surgery Tuesday morning to clean and stabilize the Grade 2 fracture, which included breaks of his tibia and fibula. He had another surgery Thursday in which a metal rod was inserted to put his tibia into position.
Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, is out for an indefinite amount of time. However, his Stewart-Haas Racing team said it would be at least three weeks and could be several more.
Stewart was 11th in the Cup standings going into the race Sunday at Watkins Glen. He fell to 17th in missing that one race.
"Tony got hurt and it's not great but it could have been worse," SHR co-owner Gene Haas said before the race Sunday. "I'm very, very hopeful that we get Tony back in the car shortly, maybe in a month or two, and see how it goes from there. … They always tell you a broken leg takes anywhere from two to four months and I think you just have to go with that.
"It just depends on how fast he heals. I know he had some really good surgeons and they put all those bones back in place. Hopefully they'll heal fast."
