NASCAR Pit Reporter Dick Berggren To Retire After Dover Race
Dick Berggren, the beloved FOX Sports reporter who has been a fixture on NASCAR broadcasts since 1981, is planning to retire when FOX's portion of the Sprint Cup Series schedule concludes. Berggren turns 70 on Sunday.
"After the FOX portion of the year ends, I've always traveled to local tracks where I still enjoy sitting in the stands with a hot dog in one hand and a beer in the other, watching the local heroes," Berggren said in a press release. "I can't get enough of local-level racing so I'll do more of that now."
Berggren, who has a PhD in psychology and is a former college professor, is leading efforts to build a racing museum at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and will stay active with other projects such as Speedway Illustrated, which he founded.
"As a colleague and friend, Dick has had no equal in the 40-plus years I've been in this business," FOX's Mike Joy said. "… Whatever the event, Dick by far is the best-prepared pit reporter this business has ever known, and he always has brought a great degree of professionalism to every telecast he has worked."
Berggren didn't rule out the possibility that he could return to pit road in some capacity on a limited basis someday.
