SCORE Laughlin Start Drawing Monday

Launching into its 39th year as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization in 2012, Sal Fish’s SCORE International will hold the start drawing Monday for the season-opening two-race 18th annual SCORE Desert Challenge.

With entries accepted so far from 11 U.S State along with Austria, Denmark, Germany and Mexico, Rounds 1 and 2 of the five-race 2012 SCORE Desert Series will be held January 13-15 along the banks of the Colorado River in the Southern Nevada resort destination of Laughlin.

For the first time in the history of the event, each day of the two-day Laughlin event (Jan. 14, Jan. 15) will be separate race events for purposes of championship points, prize money and trophies.

The popular event will once again kick off the 2012 desert racing season on the Martin Luther King birthday weekend.

The drawing for starting positions, by class, will be held on Monday, Jan. 2 at SCORE headquarters in Los Angeles.

The Laughlin event will include course practice sessions for all classes and qualifying for SCORE Trophy Truck on Friday followed by two separate and independent races, the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday. The course, used for the last several years, will be approximately six miles with the classes divided into groups for several multi-lap races each day. The start/finish line area and main pits will once again be located at the Laughlin Events Park just off of Casino Drive in Laughlin.

While entries will be accepted up to race morning, among the early entries are several former class winners in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division. All from Las Vegas, overall race winners entered so far are Rob MacCachren (1996), Tim Herbst (1995, 1997) Troy Herbst (1999) and B.J. Baldwin (2006, 2007) along with brothers Gary and Mark Weyhrich (2000). They will all be entered in SCORE Trophy truck this year.

Donald Moss, with a race-high eight class wins in this race, will again be racing in Class 3 while MacCachren has seven class wins in Laughlin. Among the others entered so far with multiple class wins is Kevin Carr, San Diego who has five Class 5 wins in Laughlin.

The season will conclude November 14-17 with the 45th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races, which will start in Ensenada, Baja California and finish in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
