Karthikeyan hit with post-race penalty

Narain Karthikeyan has been demoted from 14th to 17th at the Canadian Grand Prix after he was judged to have gained an advantage by skipping the final chicane towards the end of the race.

Karthikeyan headed a train of cars across the line in Sunday's hectic race and finished 14th on the road. However, after reviewing video evidence, the stewards handed him a 20-second post-race penalty in lieu of a drive-through for skipping the chicane at turns 13 and 14.

"The stewards, having received a report from the Race Director, have considered the following matter and determined a breach of the regulations has been committed by the competitor named below and imposed the penalty referred to," read the stewards' statement.

The decision deprived Karthikeyan of his best result since returning to F1 with HRT at the start of the season. ESPNF1
