NASCAR schedules two Milwaukee races

With the IRL turning their back on the Milwaukee Mile in 2010, it looks like the long history of open wheel racing in Milwaukee is over as NASCAR takes over completely.

The historic Milwaukee Mile, on the verge of losing all national-level racing because of continuing financial problems, is on the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series schedules announced Tuesday.

The track, a part of State Fair Park, technically does not have a promoter to put on motorsports events, only a promoter-designee. Historic Mile LLC has a letter of intent with State Fair Park that allows it to negotiate on behalf of the Mile and has until Sept. 29 to secure races and demonstrate that it can operate the business.

What conditions might need to be met between now and the June 18-19 NASCAR race weekend are unclear.

“All I can say is that our discussions with the promoter have gone very well and Milwaukee is currently on the 2010 schedule; like all other events on the schedule there is a sanction in place," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said in an e-mail. JSOnline.com
