Senna overlooked again
The Brazilian was among the names mentioned in connection with Bourdais' seat before the season even started but at that time the four-time Champ Car title-winner was handed a late reprieve.
Senna missed out in the GP2 Series as he was holding out for an F1 place but, despite also being in the running for the second Honda ride, he had to settle for competing in the Le Mans Series
Bourdais’ exit from Toro Rosso opened up the possibility of Senna finally making the jump to the top flight, before Toro Rosso eventually decided to pick Red Bull protégé Jaime Alguersuari instead.
Despite being overlooked again Senna said he was happy to wait for his big chance.
"I think it's a bit too late now for moving to F1 in 2009," he told GP Week, "It would do more harm than good to jump in with no testing. It's better to wait and do things properly for next year."
With three new teams poised to join the fray in 2010, there should be plenty of opportunities for the Brazilian, who has already been listed as a potential target for Campos Grand Prix should he not be snapped up elsewhere. He admits that he has been in talks, albeit without revealing his possible targets.
"We're speaking to quite a few of the teams, with relationships we made last year," he confirmed, "We have some really good contacts (and), also within the new teams, we have some good contacts.
"It's just ticking along right now. We're waiting for the political side of F1 to resolve itself a little bit because it's pretty messy, but it's just a question of being in the right place at the right time. We're trying to give ourselves the best chance we can get and trying to focus on the right opportunities this time.
"I'm taking this year as a good year to improve my fitness training. At the end of last year, I was already fit enough for F1, but there's no harm done in being extra fit!" Eurosport UK
