Ricky Taylor Wins Skip Barber Championship

Ricky Taylor, the 17-year-old up-and-coming racer and son of sports car champion Wayne Taylor, won his first car racing championship this weekend with the 2006-2007 Skip Barber Southern Series.

The oldest of two Taylor sons, Ricky competed in the 12-race Skip Barber Southern Series, beginning at Road Atlanta last November and completing this weekend at the famous Daytona International Raceway. He led the Series championship the entire season. Each event weekend consisted of two races with points awarded towards the championship.

The Skip Barber Southern Series season started off brilliantly for Ricky when he scored a triple-crown weekend at the inaugural Road Atlanta race, collecting the pole, two race victories and set a new track record. This elevated him to first in the points championship, a great start to the season. In December, at Sebring International Raceway, Ricky collected two podiums with third and second-place finishes. In January 2007, Ricky dazzled again by capturing the pole and two victories at Homestead/Miami Speedway. In February they returned to Sebring where another pole and two victories were awarded to the young champ. Last month at Moroso Motorsports Park, Ricky took two more podium finishes with double second-place awards. He had mathematically wrapped up the championship following Moroso and came to Daytona this weekend ready to officially earn the championship, and collected a third and fourth-place finish. An awards banquet and ceremony will be held tonight at Daytona USA to honor Ricky and the other competitors.
