Meeting to be held in support of Phoenix race

The Phoenix City Council has called a special meeting on Tuesday, September 26 to decide whether the proposed Champ Car street race will be held in 2007. The special meeting will be held on Tuesday in the Phoenix City Council Chambers at 200 West Jefferson. The doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the meeting convenes at 2:00 p.m.

Grand Prix Arizona will be a three-day festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday featuring major concerts, community displays, big name boxing as well as a nationally and internationally televised Champ Car race, all of which brings tremendous exposure to Downtown Phoenix. Similar Champ Car festivals draw more than 150,000 fans to their events and it is estimated that the Grand Prix will bring more than $65 million in economic impact to the Phoenix region.

The promoters of the Grand Prix also plan to develop a privately funded $300 million entertainment district in the vicinity of Chase Field and US Airways Center. They are NOT asking for any subsidy from the City of Phoenix – they are only asking for a permit to stage the Festival.
