Which race is bigger – the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500?

The Daytona Beach News Journal claimed that the Daytona 500 is now bigger that the Indy 500. It certainly gets bigger TV ratings, and has for years, ever since Tony George nearly destroyed the series with his ludicrous split.

But the Indy 500 has a larger seating capacity than Daytona and could host more fans for the Indy 500 than Daytona can.

The Indy Star responded with this rebuttal.

Which race is bigger is a matter of how you choose to measure it – attendance, or TV eyeballs.
