IndyCar News: Another year, another shooting outside Long Beach GP

One person was killed after a shooter opened fire outside the Long Beach GP Saturday.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Long Beach police responded to the shooting on the 0 block of Cedar Walk.

Arriving officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Authorities are investigating the scene and working to locate the suspect. No other injuries were reported.

The victim’s identity was not released. Homicide detectives cordoned off nearby streets as the investigation continued.

In a Sunday update, police said the preliminary investigation suggests the victim and either one or multiple suspects were engaged in a verbal dispute, which escalated when the suspect(s) shot the victim.

A man was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with police near the 2023 Long Beach GP racecourse is suspected of being involved in three other shootings in the area, authorities said.

The final shooting occurred Sunday when a patrol officer responding to a report of gunfire shortly before 5 p.m. spotted a man matching the suspect’s description, the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.

The preliminary investigation indicated the suspect fired shots at the officer, the statement said. The man was hospitalized with a wound that was not life-threatening.
