Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Takuma Sato, a two time winner,  was the second fastest with a lap of 39.9263s.  His Honda slowed down on the backstretch with 15 minutes left in the  session and he was pulled back into the garage.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, the 2008 winner,  was third fastest with a lap of 39.9866s.   The team would love to celebrate another win after 17 years.

Sato’s teammate Devlin DeFrancesco was fourth fastest with a lap of 40.0395s.

Will Power, the 2018 winner, was fifth fastest with a lap of 40.1036s.  The Aussie has a quick car but will have to fight his way to the front with pit strategy and speed from the 33rd position on the grid.

Pole sitter Robert Shwartzman was 29th on the timing charts.  Besides having perfect pit stops during the 500, the rookie will have to be ready to go when the green flag flies on Sunday.  He is surrounded by many former winners who are hungry for another victory.

Incidents

Graham Rahal, driver of the No 15 United Rentals Honda, caused a yellow flag 38 minutes into the practice session.  The smoke trailing from his car on the backstretch indicated he might be changing motors today.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 winner, caused the second yellow at 12:18 pm when his Chevrolet engine caught fire.
