A late Pace Car Period ended with 6 laps to go and nearly everyone pitted for fresh tires. But on a three-stop strategy, Verstappen had used up all his mediums and softs and had to bolt on a set of the unfavored hards.
The two McLarens drove off into the distance while Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and George Russell battled for third.

Leclerc on the soft tires blew past Verstappen on the slow hard tires for third. Verstappen also lost a position to Russell, who was also on soft tires.
There was contact between Russell and Verstappen in their tussle and Verstappen got hit with a 10s penalty that dropped him to 10th at the finish.

Piastri pulled away from Norris and won by 2.467s, his 5th win of the season, as he heads to his first F1 Driving Championship.
After 6 laps, Leclerc lost 10.455s to Piastri at the finish, such was the pace of the superior Rob Marshall designed McLaren.
Russell finished 4th 11.359s behind Piastri.
Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top-5, 13.648s behind Piastri.
Lewis Hamilton as 6th in the #44 Ferrari, Isack Hadjar was 7th for Racing Bulls, Pierre Gasly 8th, Fernando Alonso 9th and Verstappen rounded out the top-10.
“It was a bit of a surprise to see Max try and three-stop, and it nearly worked for him,” said Piastri. “But it was a great weekend, the pace was good and just really proud. A much better bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend.
“Hard to complain, it has been a great year and this weekend has been exactly the kind of weekend I’ve been looking for. It is a lot of fun winning races at the moment.”
“Oscar drove a very good race today, didn’t quite have the pace to match him but we gave it our best shot, we both got pretty sideways at the restart,” said a defeated Norris.
“I mean when my engineers told me that Max was going on a new hard for the last stint, I was very optimistic as I knew how bad the hard was, so that was when I knew I had to have a good restart,” said a lucky Leclerc after Verstappen easily had third wrapped up until the late Safety Car.
As a result of his Red Bull team putting him on hard tires, and the 10s penalty, Verstappen lost a boat load of points. You could almost see the steam coming out of his ears because he felt Russell rammed him earlier, and he was not penalized.
The next race is the Canadian GP in a coupe of weeks when the Rob Marshall designed McLarens will again walk off into the distance.
