Formula 1 News: Russell tops Practice 2 for 2025 GP of Canada
Last year’s polesitter for the GP of Canada, George Russell, turned the fastest lap of 1m12.123s in Practice 2 for this year’s GP of Canada at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Mercedes-powered cars swept the top 7 positions on a track that has long straights. Cars with the most HP have an advantage here, and Mercedes clearly has the most powerful engine.
Lando Norris, still sandbagging in the #4 McLaren that has a new front suspension this weekend, was 2nd fastest, 0.028s behind Russell.
Kimi Antonelli was third quick in the 2nd Mercedes, 0.288s behind teammate Russell.
Alex Albon was 4th for Williams-Mercedes, 0.322s behind Russell.
Fernando Alonso rounded out the top-5 in his #14 Aston Martin Mercedes, 0.335s behind Russell.
Oscar Piastri was 6th in the #81 McLaren Mercedes and Carlos Sainz Jr. 7th in the #55 Williams Mercedes, 0.508s behind Russell.
Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari was 8th, while Max Verstappen (fastest in Practice 1) and Liam Lawson rounded out the top-10.
With no Leclerc (car damaged badly in FP1) in this session, Hamilton had to gather all the data today for Ferrari. He has had a clean session which is what was needed.
Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin did not set a time after he ran out of talent and hit the wall with his left front on the exit of Turn 2. Stroll is making his comeback after missing the Spanish Grand Prix with an injury.
