IndyCar News: Kirkwood wins Bommarito Automotive Group 500
Andretti Global driver Kyle Kirkwood (pictured) held off Pato O’Ward and Christian Rasmussen to win his first oval IndyCar race in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway.
It was Kirkwood’s third IndyCar win of the season and his 4th career win.
“We had a good day. Everything worked to plan accordingly. If I’m being honest, we didn’t start with an amazing race car; we finished with one. That was just due to the work that the crew did and due to the work that Honda did.”
“I think as the conditions cooled, we picked up some power, and then as the conditions cooled for our car, we got a little better, but we also tuned on it, too. We were making changes at almost every single stop to get ourselves into a good window, and that played a huge factor in today’s win because in the beginning stages it felt like we have anything.”
“So we kept our heads down and stayed calm, cool, and collected, took opportunities where they came, and fortunately came away with that win.”

O’Ward was just 0.5398s behind Kirkwood at the finish. This is the Mexican’s third second place out of eight races.
“I think it was a fantastic race. Hopefully, everybody who was watching was well entertained. I was very happy with my car. We were just going through the motions and happy with what our strategy looked like, and I think we positioned ourselves well to have that shot to win.”
“I’ve got zero wins compared to Alex Palou’s six. I’ve just got a handful of podiums. We need to start racking up some wins, and that’ll make those points count come down a lot faster than what you’re seeing now, making that championship closer for me.”

Christian Rasmussen came home third for Ed Carpenter Racing, 0.8896s behind Kirkwood. This is the first podium for the 24-year-old. He started in 25th and fought back from two penalties.
“Yeah, as soon as I kind of found out how well my car worked on the high side, it was just game on. I was able to pass cars — we even got hosed one time with having to take emergency service because we were out of fuel, so I had to restart at the tail end, and that was kind of right at the point where I had kind of driven through most of the field and was up front but had to go to the back, drove through again, and man, we were just coming.”
“It was awesome. I haven’t done one of these in a while, so it’s good.”
Scott Dixon, who led 11 laps, was 4th for Chip Ganassi Racing, 4.2s behind Kirkwood’s Honda.
Santino Ferrucci rounded out the top 5 for AJ Foyt Racing, 8.9s behind Kirkwood.
The 260-lap race had 47 laps of yellow. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Devlin DeFrancesco made contact with the SAFER barrier in Turn 1 on Lap 3. The Canadian was able to return to the race after some fixes to his car.
On Lap 46, the polesitter, Will Power made contact with the SAFER barrier in Turn 4 after a tire was deflating. He limped his No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet back to the pit lane but was parked for the remainder of the race.
On Lap 130, just after the halfway point of the race, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Louis Foster got high in Turn 4 and made contact with the SAFER barrier. His damaged car traveled down the track and collected Josef Newgarden, who was the leader at that time. See the video of the accident below.
The final yellow happened on Lap 195 when AJ Foyt Enterprises’ David Malukas, who had led 65 laps early in the race, made light contact with the SAFER barrier in Turn 4 but continued on course.
