Formula 1 News: Norris-Piastri finish 1-2 in superior McLarens

No one else had a chance against the Rob Marshall designed McLarens as they rode off into the distance to finish 1-2 in the Austrian GP, with polesitter Lando Norris (pictured) winning and Oscar Piastri finishing 2nd at the Red Bull Ring.

Although Oscar Piastri was faster than Lando Norris, McLaren put the screws to Piastri with a poor pitstop strategy to ensure their favored driver, Lando Norris, won the race, his third of the year.

At the finish, Norris held off Piastri by 2.695s but Piastri was much closer until lapped traffic did him in.

Piastri ran him close, a few more laps and he might have had him. But it is Norris who wins.

“It was a tough race, pushing the whole way through, tricky and tiring,” said Norris.

“A 1-2 is exactly what we wanted, and we did it so I’m happy. We had a great battle, it was a lot of sun – a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar.

“Inside the car it was tough, especially when he was in the DRS.”

“Intense. I hope it was good watching, as it was pretty hard work inside the car,” said Piastri.

“I tried my absolute best, probably could have done a better job when I just got ahead. A good battle, probably pushed the limits a little far. Close, but not quite enough.”

After starting 2nd, Charles Leclerc finished a distant third for Ferrari, almost 20 seconds behind Norris.

“I rate our weekend as a team really well. Unfortunately, the pace today was not enough,” said Leclerc.

“I think [McLaren] were too fast for us to stay in second, third was the best we could do. I don’t regret anything we did today, we did the maximum.”

Lewis Hamilton finished where he started, in 4th, almost 29 seconds behind Norris – i.e. out to lunch.

George Russell rounded out the top-5 for Mercedes, a massive 62 seconds behind Norris.

The race started with a bang when Kimi Antonelli ran out of talent in his Mercedes and he speared the Red Bull of Max Verstappen out of the race. If Toto Wolff manages to steal Max Verstappen away from Red Bull, it will be Antonelli that loses his ride.

Liam Lawson was the last car to finish on the lead lap in 6th, 67s behind Norris.

Fernando Alonso was 7th, Gabriel Bortoleto was eighth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon to round out the top-10.

When the temperature heats up, McLaren really do look the class of the field. It would have been interesting to see what pace Red Bull had today in the hands of Verstappen, but alas, that was not to be.
