TV News: USA Motorsports Weekend TV Viewers/TV Ratings

TV viewership for major motorsports events broadcast in the USA this past weekend.  Formula 1 was in Begium at Spa Francorchamps for the Belgian GP, NASCAR was in Indy for the Brickyard 400 and IndyCar was at Laguna Seca where Alex Palou gave the other drivers a proper schooling.

NASCAR

TNT + TruTV drew only 2.009 million TV Viewers for the Brickyard 400, down 44.7% from 3.63 million viewers on NBC last year.

Saturday’s Xfinity race on CW drew 1.047 million TV viewers, down 9.7% from 1.16 million on the USA Network in 2024.

Formula 1

Sunday’s rain delay didn’t deter USA F1 fans from watching the Belgian GP in record numbers.

An average of 1.4 million TV viewers tuned in on ESPN, up 27% from 1.1 million in 2024

The race peaked at 1.6 million viewers between 11-11:15a ET

Over 546,000 18-49 year old viewers tuned in, the age group most important to advertisers. The number dwarfed IndyCar and NASCAR.

This year’s Belgian GP live attendance was a record 389,000 over the three days, dwarfing IndyCar and NASCAR.

IndyCar

F1 on a cable channel destroyed IndyCar on Fox. Of the three major events – NASCAR, Formula 1 and IndyCar – IndyCar lagged far behind, which was surprising since the lead-in to the IndyCar race, women’s soccer (the WEuro2025) final, drew 1.355 million viewers and peaked at 1.92 million. This, of course, means the IndyCar number would have been even lower if not for the big lead-in.

Fox drew only 734,000 TV viewers for the Laguna Seca race, up significantly from 2024 when only a sorry 79,000 tuned in to watch the race on a sorry NBC cable channel.

  • Up +36% vs. 538,000 viewers for the 2023 race, which aired as the season finale (9/10/23)
  • Up +17% from last year’s 626,000 viewers for the 2024 non-Indy 500 race average
  • Most-watched Laguna Seca race since 2021 (750,000 on 9/21/21)
  • Race peaked at 884,000 viewers from 5:15-5:30 PM ET
  • Through the first 14 races of the season, INDYCAR on FOX is averaging 1,486,000 viewers, up +31% over last year (1,132,000), but that number is inflated by the Indy 500.
