Formula 1 News: F1 The Movie Digital and Streaming Release Dates (Update)

Apple has a high-octane announcement: Brad Pitt’s racing thriller F1: The Movie hits streaming on Friday, December 12, capping off its blockbuster theatrical sprint. The news dropped Monday, but it came bundled with a curveball: Apple TV+ is ditching the “+” to become simply “Apple TV,” complete with what the company touts as a “vibrant new identity.”

How vibrant? We’ll see. For now, it’s just plain confusing—sharing the exact same name as Apple’s set-top box hardware and its streaming hub app.

Since blasting into theaters on June 27, 2025, F1 has rewritten the record books. It rocketed to No. 1 at the box office, racking up over $629 million worldwide to claim the crown as the highest-grossing sports movie ever and this year’s top original feature. Stateside, it notched the biggest opening weekend for an original live-action film in five years, while marking Pitt’s personal box-office best. Globally, it’s the seventh-highest earner of 2025.

Fans can’t get enough: The flick snagged an “A” CinemaScore and a stellar 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and gearheads hail it as the most pulse-pounding, authentic racing saga on screen, thanks to the crew’s bold choice to film amid real Grand Prix chaos—racing wheel-to-wheel with F1’s elite.

“It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world embrace F1: The Movie in theaters,” gushed producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “Now, we’re beyond excited to bring this exhilarating, cinematic ride to fans everywhere through Apple TV’s unparalleled global reach.”

The adrenaline hasn’t stopped at the multiplex. The tie-in soundtrack, F1: The Album, has sold over 650,000 copies worldwide and amassed more than a billion streams, owning Billboard’s Top Movie Songs chart with seven of the top 10 spots.

Tucked away at the tail end of Apple’s press release, the rebrand got just one throwaway line: “Apple TV+ is now simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity.” Don’t look for changes yet—Apple’s site and apps are still flying the old flag, and details on this “vibrant” overhaul remain as elusive as a perfect pit stop. Why drop the “+”? Your guess is as good as ours, but expect some viewer whiplash in the fast lane.
