At 94, Ecclestone sees the Brazilian prodigy as the perfect fit to replace the seven-time world champion, whom he believes should consider stepping away from the sport.
Hamilton’s much-hyped move to Ferrari over the winter has yet to deliver the on-track magic fans anticipated. After 14 Grands Prix, the British legend trails teammate Charles Leclerc by 42 points and is still chasing his first podium of the season.

The mood at Ferrari has soured, hitting a low point at the Hungarian Grand Prix. On Saturday, a visibly frustrated Hamilton labeled his performance “useless,” underscoring a troubling streak without a Q3 appearance—a challenge he’ll aim to overcome post-summer break.
Meanwhile, Bortoleto is making waves. The Brazilian, who clinched back-to-back Formula Three and Formula Two titles, has surged forward, earning points in three of the last four races before the break. After a quiet start with Sauber, his recent form is turning heads, and Ecclestone is convinced he’s the answer.
“Bortoleto’s standout performances in a midfield team like Sauber should jolt Ferrari into action,” he told Swiss outlet Blick. “The Italians must resolve their next driver question with this Brazilian talent.”
Hamilton, contracted with Ferrari through 2026 with an option to extend into 2027, has fueled speculation about his future with his Hungary struggles. Pundits and paddock insiders are buzzing about what lies ahead after the summer hiatus.
Yet Ecclestone’s stance is clear: it’s time for Hamilton to retire. “Lewis is incredibly talented—was, and perhaps still is,” he told the Daily Mail, leaving little doubt about his view on the veteran’s next move.
As Ferrari weighs its options, Ecclestone’s bold endorsement of Bortoleto could spark a seismic shift in the team’s driver lineup, setting the stage for a new era in Maranello.
