MotoGP News: Marc Marquez wins Barcelona Sprint, brother chokes
Marc Marquez extended his remarkable win streak to 15 consecutive races in Saturday’s Catalan MotoGP Sprint, capitalizing on a dramatic crash by his brother Alex Marquez, who squandered a commanding 1.5-second lead.
Marc, unbeaten since Alex’s Sprint victory at Silverstone in May, struggled to match the Gresini rider’s early pace until Alex Marquez’s error handed him the win.
Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo delivered a spirited performance to claim second, while VR46’s Fabio di Giannantonio rounded out the podium. Marc’s victory secured the 2025 MotoGP constructors’ title for Ducati.
Alex Marquez launched cleanly from pole, but early chaos saw Marc Marquez fend off Quartararo and KTM’s Pedro Acosta to secure second. Marc narrowed Alex’s lead to half a second, but the #73’s blistering practice pace seemed unbeatable until he crashed at Turn 10 with four laps remaining. Replays revealed Marc nearly suffered a similar fate but skillfully kept his Desmosedici upright.
Quartararo, distanced by the Marquez brothers, held firm against di Giannantonio and the KTMs of Acosta, Brad Binder, and Enea Bastianini. The race saw further drama as Franco Morbidelli and Jorge Martin joined Alex on the DNF list, with Morbidelli crashing at Turn 10 while attempting a pass. Aprilia’s woes deepened when Fermin Aldeguer and Marco Bezzecchi collided at Turn 5, leaving Bezzecchi clutching his arm in pain. Test rider Lorenzo Savadori also retired due to a technical issue.
Ducati has dominated every Sprint since last year’s Catalan round, when Francesco Bagnaia’s last-lap crash gifted Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro the win. Bagnaia, starting from 21st this time, could only manage 14th.
