Formula 1 News: Verstappen to compete in 24 Hours of Nürburgring

Red Bull Racing’s top advisor, Helmut Marko, has confirmed that Max Verstappen will compete in the prestigious ADAC 24 Hours of Nürburgring, enthusiastically announcing, “Yes!” in an interview with Sport.de.

Marko praised Verstappen’s commitment, noting, “It’s remarkable that a Formula 1 driver, with a packed schedule of races, simulator work, marketing, and PR duties, embraces this endurance race with such passion.”

The Austrian took a playful jab at the German regulations requiring all drivers, including a four-time world champion like Verstappen, to earn a DMSB Grade A license to race professionally at the Nürburgring.

“It’s unique that he had to prove himself in a 240 hp Porsche, despite likely completing 1,000 simulator laps around the Nordschleife,” Marko quipped. “But he took it in stride and arrived well-prepared.”

Marko highlighted the allure of the Nürburgring endurance race, calling it a dream for drivers, especially during times of struggle. “When our car wasn’t competitive, this race was Max’s passion. Now, with both F1 and this opportunity, I’m confident he’ll fight for the overall victory,” he said.

However, Marko ruled out Verstappen competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, citing greater risks due to speed differences and varying categories. “Le Mans is a different story. For now, long-distance racing is only at the Nürburgring,” he stated.

Verstappen recently tackled the Nordschleife to secure his Grade A permit. After completing a theoretical exam and a training session, he delivered a standout performance in a wet qualifying session, setting an impressive lap time. His pace continued to shine in the race, finishing 7th in his class and 27th overall.

With this preparation, Verstappen is poised to fulfill his long-held dream of competing in the iconic 24 Hours of Nürburgring, ready to take on the ‘Green Hell’ with his signature determination
