MotoGP News: Bezzecchi breaks Marquez’s collarbone after breaking Martin’s (Update)

Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi will have to serve a double long lap penalty in this Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix for causing a collision with MotoGP champion Marc Marquez in Mandalika. At the start of the Indonesia race, Bezzecchi ran out of talent, hit the back of Marquez’s bike in Turn 7, and caused him to crash.

After analysing the incident and hearing from Bezzecchi, race officials concluded that the Aprilia rider rode in an “irresponsible manner” and “caused danger” to his rivals.

Marquez was diagnosed with a fracture on his right shoulder after returning to Spain, where he underwent an operation this week.

In a thrilling Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika, Ducati rookie Fermin Aldeguer, aged 20 years and 183 days, became the second-youngest MotoGP race winner in history, securing his first Grand Prix victory in just his 18th start.

The Gresini Ducati rider dominated the 27-lap race, taking the lead on lap seven and finishing 6.987 seconds ahead of KTM’s Pedro Acosta, with teammate Alex Marquez completing the podium in third. Aldeguer’s win marked the first for a MotoGP rookie since Jorge Martin’s 2021 Austrian victory.

The race was marred by an early crash on lap one at Turn 7, where pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) collided with newly crowned 2025 world champion Marc Marquez (Ducati), causing both to crash out. Marquez suffered a fractured right collarbone and will return to Spain for further evaluation, while Bezzecchi was taken to a local hospital for checks. The incident disrupted the race, with only 14 of 19 starters finishing.

Jorge Martin, last year’s pole and grand prix winner, was missing this weekend after undergoing surgery for a collarbone fracture sustained when he collided with teammate Bezzecchi in Japan.

Aldeguer, who had finished second in Saturday’s sprint race, overtook early leader Acosta and built a commanding lead, at one point stretching it to nine seconds. Behind him, an intense battle for the podium unfolded, with Acosta, Alex Marquez, Alex Rins, Raul Fernandez, and Brad Binder trading positions. Acosta secured second with a late move, while Alex Marquez held on for third, strengthening his championship standing.

Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez’s teammate and the previous weekend’s Motegi winner, endured a tough race, crashing out on lap eight from last place. Australia’s Jack Miller, running as high as ninth, crashed at the penultimate corner with four laps remaining, finishing 14th, 55.540 seconds behind Aldeguer.

The race saw significant attrition, with crashes also claiming Joan Mir early on. Brad Binder impressed with a season-best fourth from 15th on the grid, followed by Luca Marini in fifth and Raul Fernandez in sixth. Fabio Quartararo led Yamaha in seventh, with Franco Morbidelli, Fabio Di Giannantonio, and Alex Rins rounding out the top 10.

Aldeguer, reflecting on his dream debut win, said, “I’m super happy… to be a rookie, we are doing incredible work. We have to continue like this.”

The MotoGP season continues at Australia’s Phillip Island from October 17-19, with questions lingering over Marquez and Bezzecchi’s fitness for the next round.
