Max Verstappen, on older tires on his Red Bull, had to withstand intense pressure from the McLaren of Lando Norris the entire race but held on to finish 2nd and gain some critical points on the McLaren duo of Norris and Oscar Piastri in 3rd and 4th.

The start saw Norris clip the rear of Verstappen’s Red Bull and bang wheels with teammate Oscar Piastri, the Briton subsequently getting past his teammate in a close scrap. Piastri voiced his unhappiness at how the incident had played out with his teammate.

Verstappen was 5.4-seconds behind Russell at the finish despite complaining about braking and downshift issues in the RB21 dog.

“Feels amazing, especially after what happened a couple of years ago [when he crashed late]. So grateful to the team who did an amazing job all weekend. So happy. I was a bit nervous at the beginning when I saw Max on the soft, but it all worked out,” said Russell.

“The whole race was quite difficult for a few different reasons, so we need to understand what went wrong today. For us, second was the maximum result,” said Verstappen who was disappointed but happy knowing he gained points on both McLaren drivers.

Norris was just 0.636s behind Verstappen and 6.939s behind Russell at the finish.

With their 3rd and 4th finishes, McLaren clinched the F1 constructors championship in a row.

“It was a tough race, Max didn’t make any mistakes but I gave it my all today,” said Norris. “I’m happy, I got forward two positions and we won as a team the Constructors’ again so I’m happy.

[Regarding his Lap 1 skirmmish with Piastri] It was slippery, so wet in lots of places. It is racing, I put it on the inside, had a little correction and yeah, that’s it.”

Kimi Antonelli passed the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc with 13 laps to go and rounded out the top-5 in the 2nd Mercedes, 27.9s behind teammate Russell.

Ferrari teammates Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton came home in 6th and 7th while Fernando Alonso, Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz Jr. rounded out the top-10.

Alonso just missed out on overtaking Hamilton at the finish, the Aston Martin driver crossing the line just 0.416s behind in eighth.

Hamilton lost his brakes in the closing stages, and thus started to straight-line some of the corners. As such, he picked up a black and white track for track limit infringements, before again running wide on the last lap. He was warned again, and having been shown the flag, that normally means a penalty could be coming.

Piastri still leads the championship with 336 points, 22 points ahead of Norris in 2nd with 314 points while Verstappen lurks in 3rd with 273 points with six races and three sprint races yet to run.

Isack Hadjar was 11th for Racing Bulls, with the Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda following in 12th ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in 13th. Alex Albon had to settle for 14th, while Liam Lawson claimed 15th in the other Racing Bulls machine.

Next up is the USGP at COTA in two weeks time.
