Track News: Memphis International Raceway set for $60 million upgrade

The former Memphis International Raceway in Millington, Tennessee, is roaring back to life. On January 7, 2026, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off a ambitious $60 million revitalization project. The facility, closed since 2022, was acquired by IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell in December 2025, marking the beginning of its transformation into a multi-use racing and entertainment hub.

The plans include demolishing outdated structures, upgrading the existing drag strip and circle (oval) track, adding a new dirt track, and building an amphitheater for concerts. These enhancements aim to revive drag racing and stock car events while expanding the venue to host large-scale national and international gatherings, including a new national nitro series.

IHRA President Leah Martin expressed optimism about the project’s impact, stating that the venue could host major events within three years. Initial racing activities could resume as early as fall 2026, with a potential race finale scheduled for November. Major IHRA events are already planned for October 2026, including the Sportsman Series and World Finals.

Local officials and community leaders attended the ceremony, highlighting the project’s potential to boost tourism, support local businesses, and drive economic growth in the Memphis area.
