Formula E News: Evans masters Miami mayhem to claim record 15th win

The 2026 Miami E-Prix, Round 3 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, delivered a spectacle of skill and strategy amid treacherous wet conditions at the Miami International Autodrome. Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans stormed from ninth on the grid to secure a commanding victory, marking his record-breaking 15th career win in the all-electric series and surpassing the 1,000-point milestone.

The Kiwi driver’s audacious switchback overtake on polesitter Nico Müller proved pivotal, as he pulled away to finish 3.1 seconds ahead of the Porsche Formula E Team duo of Müller and Pascal Wehrlein.

Qualifying: Müller Masters the Wet for Maiden Pole

The weekend kicked off with a rookie free practice session where Envision Racing’s Zak O’Sullivan set the pace, clocking a 55.810 ahead of Theo Pourchaire (Citroën) and Gabriele Mini (Nissan). In Free Practice 1, Cupra’s Dan Ticktum topped the timesheets with a 55.503s lap, showcasing strong form in the mixed conditions. FP2 saw DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard quickest at 55.531s.

Qualifying was a nail-biter, with Porsche’s Nico Müller securing his first Formula E pole position in a dramatic session. The Swiss driver edged out Andretti’s Felipe Drugovich by a mere fraction, posting a 55.455s in the final duel. Müller started alongside Drugovich, while points leader Nick Cassidy (Citroën) lined up 16th and reigning champion Oliver Rowland (Nissan) in 12th, setting the stage for a chaotic race.

Race Narrative: Drama in the Downpour

The 41-lap race began under Safety Car due to heavy rain, testing the GEN3 Evo cars’ all-weather capabilities. Müller led initially, but Drugovich capitalized on an early ATTACK MODE activation—boosting to 350kW with all-wheel drive—to snatch the lead in the slippery conditions.

As the rain intensified, a pivotal incident unfolded: Drugovich and Jaguar’s António Félix da Costa tangled while battling for position, dropping both out of contention. This opened the door for Evans, who methodically climbed from the fringes of the top 10. On Lap 27, Evans executed a brilliant switchback on Müller, faking one way before diving inside to take the lead.

From there, Evans managed his energy and navigated the second ATTACK MODE phase flawlessly, building a gap to the pursuing Porsches. Müller held firm in second, fending off teammate Wehrlein, who charged impressively from 11th to complete the podium.

Envision’s Joel Eriksson achieved a career-best fourth, while Mahindra’s Nyck de Vries and Edo Mortara rounded out the top six in a strong showing for the Indian team. Nissan endured a tough day, with Rowland claiming the fastest lap but finishing 12th, and teammate Norman Nato in 17th. Championship leader Cassidy struggled to 16th, scoring no points but retaining his lead.

Driver Reactions

Mitch Evans reflected on his milestone: “It’s special to have this record for the most wins. I’m still missing the big one – the championship – but these stats are great. It’s a huge testament to the team. Hopefully this is a good restart to our season and we can continue from 15 wins.”

Nico Müller, delighted with his podium on debut for Porsche: “I’m super pleased for the guys at Porsche Formula E Team. We’ve worked very hard to get myself integrated into the team quickly. Our third race weekend and both cars on the podium, I think we could only ask for a little bit more! Mitch was just a tiny bit better today and he really deserved that victory so congrats to him.”

Pascal Wehrlein added: “It was a good race. I struggled a bit the whole weekend and we found an issue on the car which probably compromised everything that happened before the race a bit. But still, I think P3 today was the maximum for us with that starting position. It’s a valid podium for the team, a lot of points so we can be happy with that.”

The series now heads to Jeddah for a double-header on February 13-14, where Porsche’s momentum could challenge Cassidy’s early dominance.
