NASCAR: Van Gisbergen wins Xfinity & Cup poles in Chicago

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen won the pole position for both the NASCAR Xfinity and Cup races on the streets of Chicago

The winner of the inaugural race two years ago, van Gisbergen turned a best lap of 88.338 mph on Saturday, beating Michael McDowell (87.879 mph) for the top Cup race starting spot for the 75-lapper.

Earlier, van Gisbergen schooled the field to win pole for the Xfinity race.

The Kiwi, who won at Mexico City in June, is looking for his second Cup Series victory in four weeks and the third of his career.

Carson Hocevar (87.824 mph), Tyler Reddick (87.779 mph) and Chase Briscoe (87.734 mph) completed the top five. Kyle Busch, Ryan Preece, Chris Buescher, Ty Gibbs and Austin Dillon rounded out the top 10.

Noah Gragson hit the wall and suffered a broken toe link at the end of Group 1 qualifying and will start 24th. In Group 2, Bubba Wallace went for a pair of spins, while Brad Keselowski went for one as well. Wallace will start 37th, while Keselowski will roll off 15th.

Corey Heim failed to qualify for Sunday’s race after Katherine Legge knocked him out during Group 2 time trials. The No. 67 23XI Racing driver turned a lap of 85.616 mph, but Legge — driving the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports entry — beat him with an 85.744 mph lap to secure the final starting spot Sunday afternoon.
