Chaz Mostert has surged to the top of the standings for the first time this season, sealing his place in the bp Adelaide Grand Final after a commanding win in today’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

Supercars News: Mostert Storms to Sandown Glory, Claims Supercars Lead.

With just four rounds left in the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship, Chaz Mostert (pictured) has rocketed to the top of the standings for the first time this year. His dominant victory in today’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500—a commanding 250km sprint—clinched his ticket to the bp Adelaide Grand Final, leaving rivals scrambling.

The fan-favorite Gold Coaster now holds a slim three-point edge over Red Bull Racing’s Broc Feeney heading into tomorrow’s finale at Sandown. Mostert’s hard-fought triumph capped a nail-biting duel with defending champion Will Brown, who charged from 15th on the grid to snatch second.

Rounding out the podium was Mostert’s Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Ryan Wood, whose pole-sitting start and gritty defense against Brown’s late surge were crucial in paving the way for victory.

Stakes High for Tomorrow’s Closer

The weekend’s second race will finalize the top-four contenders for the Adelaide showdown in two weeks. Mostert’s win secures his spot no matter what happens Sunday. Feeney clings to second, Brown vaults to third, and Bathurst 1000 hero Matt Payne sits fourth.

Rookie sensation Kai Allen lurks in fifth, with Cam Waters and Thomas Randle rounding out the chase in sixth and seventh. A win for any of these drivers (save Mostert) would punch their Adelaide ticket.

This marks Mostert’s third straight victory—building on his Gold Coast 500 sweep last month—and his 28th career win, tying Supercars icons Greg Murphy and Marcos Ambrose for 13th on the all-time list.

Race Recap: A Masterclass in Strategy and Speed

Mostert seized the jump at the lights, snagging the holeshot into Turn 1 ahead of Wood. Kai Allen loomed large for third but settled into fifth behind Brodie Kostecki and Anton De Pasquale.

By Lap 10, Mostert had carved out a two-second cushion over Kostecki in third, with Wood just 1.5 seconds adrift in second. Brown, meanwhile, was on a mission, bullying past Erebus Motorsport’s Cooper Murray at Turn 4 on Lap 12 to claim 11th.

The first stops shook things up early: Payne blinked first from fifth on Lap 14, unable to dislodge De Pasquale. Feeney then pounced on Allen for fifth into Turn 1 of Lap 15. Wood pitted from second on Lap 18, trailing Mostert by 1.7 seconds, while Team 18’s David Reynolds slipped to Brown on Lap 22 amid grip woes—Brown’s eight-place climb now all on raw pace.

Feeney stopped on Lap 23, Mostert a lap later, but Wood’s undercut vaulted the Kiwi into the virtual lead. By Lap 31, the cycle sorted: Wood led Mostert by 2.3 seconds, Payne surged to third (+3 spots), Feeney to fourth (+3), and Kostecki slipped to fifth (-1). Brown sat 10th, Waters 13th, Randle 21st among the Finals chasers.

Mostert wasted no time reeling in Wood, sweeping past into Turn 1 on Lap 34. Brown, on fresh rubber from his Lap 28 stop, sliced through the pack: eighth past Bryce Fullwood (Lap 40), seventh over De Pasquale (Lap 42), and sixth by Allen (Lap 45).

Up front, Mostert and Wood dictated terms—first and second split by 2.8 seconds, Wood a further 3.2 clear of Feeney with 35 laps remaining.

The second stops loomed with 30 to go. Payne dived in first among the leaders (33 laps left), loading extra fuel for the long haul. Feeney followed on Lap 48, De Pasquale next. Kostecki pitted Lap 50 but locked up into Turn 1, handing sixth back to Feeney after a wide moment.

Wood stopped Lap 51, Mostert from the lead on 52—emerging with a commanding edge. The long-runners held firm: Brown on Lap 55, Waters 57, Randle 58. This ignited a scrap for fourth between Kostecki, Payne, and Brown—the #1 Camaro dispatching Payne into Turn 1 (23 laps left) and Kostecki a lap later at the same hairpin.

With Andre Heimgartner’s stop cleansing the field, the top order locked in: Mostert led, Wood 1.1 seconds back. Feeney third, three seconds off the front. But Brown was the rocket in fourth, under eight seconds adrift and mining his fresh tires.

Thirteen laps from home, Brown latched onto Feeney and snatched third into Turn 1. By 10 to go, he was just two seconds shy of Mostert—but Wood’s flawless rear-guard action bought his teammate breathing room. As Brown pressured for second, Mostert ballooned his lead to 4.5 seconds.

Four laps out, Brown muscled past Wood into Turn 4 with a bold dive. Yet Mostert was untouchable, crossing the line first after 81 laps to claim the checker.

Brown’s P2 rocketed him from fifth to third in the championship. Wood took third on track, Feeney slipped to second overall. Kostecki rounded out fifth ahead of Payne (now fourth in points). Allen was seventh, De Pasquale eighth, Fullwood ninth, and James Golding 10th.

Tickford’s Tough Day

It was a grim outing for Tickford Racing’s title bid: Waters salvaged 12th from ninth on grid, Randle 16th from 22nd. They trail Allen in fifth by points, with everything on the line tomorrow.
