IndyCar News: IndyCar Open Testing Day 1
Good afternoon from the Indy 500 Open Test at the infamous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today’s weather is pretty good compared to the monsoon rains and high winds that were in the area late last night. The tornado siren sounded at 11 pm in the southern part of the city, but no tornadoes were reported.
After the track was dried this morning, testing started at 10 am, with the veterans running laps under cloudy skies. Alex Palou took an early advantage to run some laps without traffic.
“We wanted to be one of the first out on track”, the 2025 winner stated. “We were waiting to choose a gap. We saw that nobody wanted to run, so we said, We’ll take it.”
“We had a small issue with the car, so we had to go back to a garage and fix it, and then we just did an install, checking that everything was good. So we did that. And that’s the end of my morning.”
“At the end of the day, we like whatever we try here, we know it’s big enough, like we’re not trying to find perfect camber, the perfect tow for that car at this time.”
Rookie Orientation and Refreshers
Nine drivers had to complete the orientation and refresher course today between Noon and 2 pm. Everyone except Katherine Legge completed their refresher and rookie orientation.
Katherine Legge, the newly announced No. 11 for HMD Motorsports with the AJ Foyt Racing entry, did not get much track time because the transponder in her new Chevrolet was not working. She did not complete her refresher course today.
Jack Harvey, driving the No 24 Invest Chevrolet for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, ran the fastest lap of the session. “Hollywood”, his FOX nickname, is taking a break from being a pit reporter to racing in his ninth Indy 500 next month.
Helio Castroneves, a 4-time winner of the Indy 500, was the second fastest in his No 06 Meyer Shank Racing Chevrolet.
Jacob Abel, driving the No 51 Chevrolet for Abel Motorsports, was third fastest.
Ed Carpenter, a three-time pole winner for this race, was fourth fastest in his No 33 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 race winner, was fifth fastest in his No 31 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.
Dennis Hauger, the 2025 INDY NXT Champion, was sixth fastest in his No 19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda.
Caio Collect, driving the No 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, was seventh fastest.

Mick Schumacher, driving the No 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda, was eighth fastest.
Testing will continue with all cars taking to the track around 2:15 pm.
