Verstappen closes on sportscar deal

Former F1 driver Jos Verstappen could make a return to international racing after a six-year absence later this season, Motorsport.com has learned.

The Dutchman, who is currently overseeing his son Max's debut F1 season, is working on a plan to race later this season in a major European sportscar championship.

"We are talking and we will see," said Verstappen. "It is something that could happen."

Verstappen, who attends every grand prix as an advisor to his son, discounted a full program, saying: "I don't want to lose out too much being at F1 races.

"A couple of races and then Le Mans would be okay."

He also poured water on any notion of teaming up with his son in a car at Le Mans, saying: "No, Max should (eventually) do LMP1, I should do LMP2."

The former Benetton and Arrows F1 driver has not raced since 2009 when he competed for Aston Martin Racing with a Lola LMP1 car at Le Mans with Anthony Davidson and Darren Turner. Motorsport.com
