Moscow to start construction on F1 track this week

UPDATE (GMM) Work on a formula one standard circuit began near Moscow on Wednesday, Russian media said.

We reported earlier this year that Hans Geist, formerly in charge of F1 projects in Austria and Bahrain, is to oversee the construction of Moscow Raceway, located 77 kilometers west of Moscow in the town of Volokolamsk.

The Hermann Tilke designed circuit, to bid for DTM and MotoGP races, is slated to be completed in 2010.

"The track will be designed to formula one standards. But the operator may not necessarily have a grand prix, even if the opportunity would be accepted if presented," Geist said earlier this year.

Russian media on Wednesday said the cost of the project is $215m (5.5 billion rubles).
