Suzuka to return as next night race?

(GMM) Suzuka could be set to return to the formula one calendar as a night race.

F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone suggested in Singapore that "Japan" is his next target to convince to install floodlights.

Currently, Fuji stages the Japanese grand prix, but from 2009 it is expected that Honda-owned Suzuka will begin alternating the country's annual F1 privilege.

The pit buildings and main grandstands have been demolished since Suzuka last staged a grand prix in 2006, and Motorsport Aktuell suggests that floodlighting could be in organizers' plans for the rebuilt circuit.

Spotted in Singapore at the weekend was Australian grand prix chief executive Drew Ward, but he insists that night racing is not in the immediate future of the Melbourne race.

"Our current contract runs through to 2015 and it has been ruled out in the present circumstances. In the future, who knows?" he told the Herald Sun.
