Will Indy fans get refunds from NASCAR, Goodyear?

Remember a few years ago when Formula One had a tire fiasco at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that resulted with, what, a couple F1 cars, a dirt bike and a Silver Crown car racing on Sunday?

What a joke, many of us in the NASCAR world said. The fans deserve refunds, we said from our high and mighty position. That would NEVER happen over here, we snickered under our breath.

I’m now reminded what Toyota Racing Development boss Lee White said when he was crafting Toyota’s response to NASCAR’s engine rule change in the Nationwide Series. He said his wife always tells him, make sure your words are sweet, because you might have to eat them.

Guess who is eating their words now?

Sunday’s “race" at the Brickyard was perhaps a bigger fiasco than the F1 event there a few years ago. The only thing that would have made it worse would have been – well, wait, nothing would have made it worse.

Maybe Goodyear should have pulled all its tires from Indy like Michelin did three years ago. Michelin discovered not long after getting to Indy that its tires wouldn’t last more than 10 laps around the road course, so with safety in mind, the tire company pulled out, leaving six cars to run the race.

Ten laps. Hmmm. Sound familiar? That’s about how long Goodyear’s tires lasted Sunday, but instead of pulling out of the race – which truly wasn’t an alternative since there is no other tire company in the sport – NASCAR came to the “rescue," throwing yellow flags every – wait for it – 10 laps or so.
