Malaysia may back Fauzy’s F1 dream
Just as countryman Alex Yoong was backed for the Minardi drive in 2002, the Kuala-Lumpur based newspaper New Straits Times speculates that an impending news conference could announce government support for Fauzy's plans.
The 25-year-old, who raced in the Renault World Series this year and formerly in GP2 mostly with the backing of his family, was among the multiple test drivers for the Dutch team Spyker in 2007.
That contract ends on December 31.
"I'm still not certain about what I'll be doing next year. If there isn't a budget, I'll either do another season in the World Series or look at other options," Fairuz, who is based in England, said.
But while he has been disappointed with the government's interest in his career so far, Fairuz is expected to be the subject of a press conference to be held next week by the Motorsports Commission of Malaysia (MCM).
MCM chief executive Nordin Yassin, however, refused to comment on the possible content of the announcement.
"We are just awaiting a date to be set by the Sports Minister. But I cannot tell you what it is about," he said.
