Six new companies eye Surfers race sponsorship

Lexmark 300 Indy general manager Greg Hooton hailed the four-day event a success. However, while he said he was confident about the future of the Champ Car series, he could not guarantee it. In recent days there has been widespread speculation about the future of the series and the possibility of changes to the Surfers Paradise event.

"I can never guarantee what Champ Car will do. My major concern is making sure we can put on the best race that we can," he said.

"Champ Car is certainly positive about their future. They'll probably announce an extra round or two in Europe next year, so they're still looking to move forward, and the same with the V8s."

Mr. Hooton said he had not looked at other options if Champ Cars folded.

"Until such time as I get more of an indication that something was going to happen I'm quite comfortable where Champ Cars sit," he said.

Despite concerns about the future, sponsors appear keen to remain involved in the event.

Six companies are interested in a naming-rights sponsorship deal after current sponsor Lexmark announced it would not continue next year.

"We took them around and showed them what it was all about. Between now and the new year it's a matter of trying to follow up with all of those guys and make sure that we address each and all of their concerns," said Mr. Hooton. "I'd like to think that we could have something in the new year. It may take a bit longer."

Mr. Hooton said the new sponsor could be national or international. Goldcoast.com.au
