F1 to implement brake lights

UPDATE (GMM) Spokesmen for Ferrari and Renault have confirmed that they were among teams that tested the use of brake lights at the Bahrain test last week.

We revealed exclusively at the weekend that, presumably at the FIA's behest and on the grounds of improved safety, several runners' rear rain lights were equipped to turn red under braking at the final group test of the 2007 pre-season.

"I have spoken to the engineers and we did indeed test them," a Renault spokesman said on Monday.

Ferrari's spokesman told us: "Yes we tested it but it is just for the future, not for this year."

03/03/07 (GMM) Several formula one teams tested the use of brake lights at the Bahrain test last week.

Sources report that runners for Super Aguri, Toyota, McLaren, Renault and Ferrari – and possibly others – trialed the innovation at the Sakhir circuit. The news is sure to spark speculation that the governing body could implement brake lights on the grounds of safety.

Further information is not available at this time, but it is clear that the single rain light below the rear wing glowed red when the drivers braked into corners.
