Port Authority to buy failed ISC property

With NASCAR's hopes of finding a home on Staten Island dashed, there’s word the Port Authority is now considering buying the land instead. A spokesman for the Port Authority confirms the agency may be interested in using the site to expand the New York Container Terminal, a cargo handling facility located nearby. However, the agency stresses that any plans are in preliminary stages.

The International Speedway Corporation bought the land in 2004 with the hopes of using it as a racetrack, but community opposition killed the project. The ISC says it hasn't heard from the Port Authority yet, but adds the property will undergo a financial evaluation before any decisions are made. ny1.com
