Seen in Long Beach – VII

UPDATE Also here from Ford was motorsports boss Dan Davis, Senior VP Anne Stevens and Cosworth's commercial Director Bernd Ferguson. Speculation is that talk is about an equitable engine formula that both Ford and Honda can live with in a merged series scenario.

Honda has no competition in the current scenario. Though not happy with the lack of competition, they also realize head-to-head battles for supremacy against other manufacturers is not in the cards given the current economic climate.

Therefore, the solution is simple – the Grand-Am concept. As we have stated previously, with the same ECU, put the 2.65 L Honda turbo and the 2.65 L Ford Cosworth on the dyno. Compare their HP and torque curves. Tweak the engines so both curves are essentially equal and then lock the engines down. Blueprint them and do not allow any changes….just rebuilds. With equal engines Ford and Honda should win their fair share of races without the worry that one will outspend their other to gain a HP advantage. Would Honda agree to such a restricted scenario? What competition do they have now in the IRL?

You decide.

04/09/06 Honda's Robert Clarke is here today at the Long Beach race as meetings continue toward a possible merger. We are hearing that NASCAR folks are working behind the scenes to kill any merger. Having benefitted immensely from the split, why would they want a serious competitor. The conspiracy theorists have said all along that the folks in Daytona want to kill off open wheel racing, though they would never admit that publicly.
