Ganassi NTT Data driver Scott Dixon topped opening practice for the Long Beach GP with a time of 1m07.636s. It looked like it was going to be a sweep of the top times by Honda drivers, but Helio Castroneves spoiled the Honda party with a late lap of 1m07.761s.

Sebastien Bourdais, who led most of the session was third in the #18 Dale Coyne Honda ahead of James Hinchcliffe (Honda) and Will Power (Chevy).

Except for a few minor spins, the session ran incident free.
