NHMS GM arrested, charged with indecent exposure

From USA Today — New Hampshire Motor Speedway general manager Jerry Gappens was arrested last week and charged with indecent exposure and lewdness, according to WMUR-TV in Manchester, N.H.

Gappens was charged with the misdemeanors after he was "engaged in sexual activity with a woman inside a car," police told WMUR.

A call to the Manchester police was not immediately returned Thursday night. Gappens' attorney released the following statement to WMUR:

"Mr. Gappens acknowledges using poor judgment that has resulted in a misdemeanor charge that is both embarrassing and devastating to him and his family, and for that, he sincerely apologizes.

"He regrets his actions. While he made a bad decision, he did not, in my opinion, engage in conduct that violates the referenced statute or any other criminal law. Mr. Gappens cooperated fully with the police, and we hope to have this difficult situation resolved soon."

Scott Cooper, a spokesman for track owner Speedway Motorsports Inc., said the company had no comment at this time.

Gappens was the former head of public relations and marketing at Charlotte Motor Speedway before he took over at the New Hampshire track when SMI bought it in 2008. According to the track's website, he resides in Bedford, N.H., with his wife and daughter.
