Conway leads Toyota to victory

Mike Conway turned in an impressive second stint yesterday at the 6 Hours of Bahrain

LONDON – 16th November – Mike Conway’s return to the FIA World Endurance Championship ended in success, as his #7 Toyota Racing TS040 Hybrid won the 6 Hours of Bahrain!

Starting from fourth on the grid, Conway’s teammate Alex Wurz began the race well, as he moved the team up to second behind the team’s sister car driven by Sebastien Buemi.

Mike took over during the second hour, with the team in third place after the stop. Conway looked quick from the get go, as he soon regained second place for the team.

As the sun set, Anthony Davidson in the #8 Toyota had to pit due to a problem with the alternator, meaning Mike was able to take the lead and build a gap over his rivals. After a quick pit stop which put him back in second place, Mike went on the charge once again, quickly retaking the lead before setting the car’s fastest lap.

Eventually Mike’s stunning stint ended with the car in the lead, as he was replaced by Stephane Sarrazin. Sarrazin maintained the lead and was eventually replaced by Wurz who saw the car through to the chequered flag, as the team won by 50 seconds.

Following the brilliant win, a jubilated Mike said, “Today was a great result for us in #7. Stephane and Alex did some awesome stints and I am pleased with my performance. It’s great to pay back the faith and support the team has shown me."

Mike continued, “To win my first WEC LMP1 race, in only my second race with Toyota is a great result and a great day. I will cherish this moment for a long time."

This was the first race the #7 has won all season. With the win, Mike has the brilliant statistic of being the only driver to win in both the IndyCar Series, where he won two races and the WEC this season.
