Mercedes afraid of equal competition

Mercedes, not up for an open fight, knowing they will probably lose

[Editor's Note: When the rules were open and everyone had a chance to up their game to win, Mercedes got beat over and over and over. Now that they found an advantage they don't want to give the other manufacturers a chance to up their game because they know they will probably get beat over and over and over again. So with the rules now frozen (lucky for Mercedes isn't it?)] Mercedes plans to block an attempt by F1 rivals "to relax the rules and allow engine development during the course of next season," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS.

The engine rules "are currently 'frozen' in-season to keep costs down after the introduction of costly new V6 turbo hybrid power units this year." Renault-powered rivals Red Bull, "dethroned by Mercedes" as constructors' champions last weekend, and Ferrari "want the rules relaxed to allow in-season development that might give them a chance to close the gap." Mercedes F1 Exec Dir Toto Wolff said that "his team had already voted against the proposal" and would do so again when the matter goes to an F1 commission meeting. Wolff: "I don't think we will change our mind in the next month, whenever the commission meeting is going to take place." Reuters

[Editor's Note: Look for Bernie to have a little talk with Toto. The discussion might go like this, "Boy, have a seat boy. You know I built this sport into what it is today and I'll be damned if I am going to allow one team to dominate the sport without giving the others a fair shot. If one team dominates F1 will become a bigger borefest than it is today. So boy, listen, and listen closely. If you ever want to win another race in this series, you'll agree to relaxing the rules to give the others a fighting chance. Do I make myself clear boy?"

Toto: Yes sir Bernie. Yes sir.

Bernie: I knew you would understand boy. Now get out of my office and don't let the door hit you in the posterior on the way out.]
