Fans line up for tickets to inaugural Grand Prix Indianapolis
“This is the first time they’ve ever done anything here like this, so I wanted to be here early," said Dr. Terry Henderson, who has been coming to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1958.
The new Grand Prix of Indianapolis will be the first IndyCar road race at IMS and organizers said they hope it will jumpstart the Month of May and build excitement toward the 98th Indianapolis 500.
The Grand Prix of Indianapolis will take place on a newly designed, 14-turn road course. A $5 million reconfiguration project is underway on the existing IMS road course to create more speed and passing zones. Additional spectator mounds and grandstands will give fans a new perspective of the course.
Sarah Fisher, a former IndyCar driver and part owner of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing joined fans Monday morning and even sold tickets to the first few people in line.
“I hope it adds some excitement and energy to the first couple of weekends that we’re at Indianapolis. People will see the race on Saturday and then we’ll open up to oval practice on Sunday. I’m all about the Indy 500, I always have been, and to come here and race for the first time on the road course with an IndyCar team is going to be very special," said Fisher.
The IndyCar Series road race will be held Saturday, May 10 and the 98th edition of the Indy 500 will happen Sunday, May 25.
Tickets for both events are available at 9 a.m. starting Monday. Fans can visit the IMS website or call (800) 822-INDY or (317) 492-6700 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (ET) Monday through Friday.
Fans can also drop by the IMS Ticket Office at the IMS Administration Building at the corner of Georgetown Road and 16th Street between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
