Should IndyCar adopt Power Steering? (Update)

07/17/13 A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, After watching the past few events and seeing the Drivers receive broken fingers, hands, wrists, I have come to the conclusion that the series needs to take a serious look at Power Steering.

Formula 1 has and allows Power Steering and I have always had power steering in all the cars I drove except the Indy cars.

I would be willing to bet that with Power Steering the damage to the hands would become either a thing of the past or at least minimal. As you are aware, Power Steering absorbs the impact and doesn't transfer it to the wheel with nearly as much force.

I would think the cost would not be any more than a nose and wing assembly that they knock off at will and the weight would be the same for all cars. If they are allowed everyone will have them because the fatigue factor of the drivers would basically go away which should in turn effect fewer accidents.

I have thought about this for a long time ever since I first drove an Indy Car, it would be especially valuable on the road circuits with the heavy down force from the large wings. Steve Chassey, former IndyCar driver
