Single DRS zone for Malaysian Grand Prix

There will be just one DRS zone for this weekend’s second round of the season in Malaysia, with the FIA choosing the start/finish straight as its location.

For Sepang, the detection point will be 207 meters before Turn 15, the final corner of the lap. This will allow for an overtaking advantage on the following start/finish straight, with the activation zone beginning just five meters out of the hairpin.

In Australia last weekend, the FIA opted for two DRS activation zones but just a single detection beam; although the idea was initially criticized by some, it proved to be successful as failed overtakes into Turn 1 could then take place at Turn 3.

2012 marks the 14th running of the Malaysian Grand Prix, which debuted in 1999 as Michael Schumacher allowed through Ferrari team-mate and title contender Eddie Irvine. Curiously, current championship leaders McLaren are yet to pick up a pole position at the circuit which is just outside Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
