IndyCar cancels 2012 Vegas finale
The series was scheduled to close its 2012 season at the speedway on Oct. 14, but INDYCAR and speedway officials said considerable testing with the new car is needed prior to returning to the facility.
"We feel we need to give our technical team ample time to conduct thorough testing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, once we complete our ongoing investigation into the 15-car accident during the Oct. 16 race at the track," said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR.
The 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season opens March 25 with the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The complete schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
[Editor's Note: When in doubt, follow the money, We suspect the real reason the race was cancelled is because IndyCar will take another financial bloodbath on the race. Despite giving away nearly 100,000 free tickets, the turnout for the race this past October was pathetic. Imagine if fans had to pay for the tickets. The fans have voted with their wallets and oval racing, except for a miniscule minority, is not what IndyCar fans prefer. They talk a good game on discussion forums (thereby fooling IndyCar management), but when it comes time to open their wallets and buy race tickets, they are nowhere to be found. If they want to add another oval race to the schedule, run a Labor Day 400 miler at the Indy Speedway. If 75,000 to 100,000 show up it will instantly be the 2nd biggest race on the schedule.]
