Former CART IndyCar inspector dies

Jay Crawford Jr., 82, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 24, 1929 to Jay Sr. and Dorothy (Stock) Crawford. Jay was a graduate of the former Macomber High School and served in the US Army in the Korean War. On June 26, 1953, he married Bettie Miracle. Jay was employed as a boilermaker with Local 85 for 42 years. He spent the last 15 years working with the William Ferrel Company and Catalytic Construction, retiring in 1992. In 1983, Jay began working with the technical inspection division of Championship Auto Racing Teams. Jay and Bettie spent many years traveling the racing circuit with Championship Auto Racing Teams. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling throughout the world with Bettie. His true passion was attending his granddaughters many sporting events. Jay is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bettie; son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Deb; grandchildren, Kristin, Kaitlyn, and Kimberly Crawford, and sister, Joan Pickerel. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Dorothy Brown. Friends may call at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, on Tuesday, August 30, from 2:00-9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
