Baltimore Grand Prix ticket sales speed past 20,000

Baltimore Grand Prix organizers said Thursday more than 20,000 tickets have been sold to fans in 33 states and Puerto Rico for the 2011 Labor Day weekend street race.

Tickets went on-sale to the general public Dec. 9. That followed a private pre-sale the prior week.

Jay Davidson, CEO of Baltimore Racing Development LLC, said heading into 2011 with more than 20,000 tickets sold “is incredible."

Tickets sales for the event have come from every state along the East Coast spanning from Maine to Florida, organizers said.

The 2-mile race, part of the Izod IndyCar Series, will zoom past the Inner Harbor to Oriole Park at Camden Yards Sept. 2-4.

Tickets range from $160 for a three-day grandstand pass to $895 for terrace club tickets — high-end packages with hospitality amenities.

Meanwhile, organizers are still marketing a title sponsorship to the event, which they have said is worth $1 million to $2 million annually.

The event is expected to draw more than 100,000 people and generate $11 million in direct city tax revenue.

The race is slated for five years beginning in September. Baltimore Business Journal
